A 1939 silkscreen poster announcing an exhibition in Boston, Massachusetts, it carries a February 16, 1939 date stamped on the back, which helps place it in the final years before the United States entered the war. The Federal Art Project, one arm of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored it, and the project used posters like this to publicize its exhibitions and programs in communities across the country. Silkscreen was a relatively inexpensive method that let designers print bold flat areas of color in small runs, and it became one of the signature techniques of the New Deal poster programs.
