The equestrian statue here is the one that sets this view apart: the bronze of George Washington on horseback, which stands in the Boston Public Garden near the flower beds that the city kept as formal displays. The garden was laid out in the 1860s on land that had been reclaimed from the Back Bay, and by 1904 it had become one of Boston's most popular public spaces, with its swan boats, paths, and seasonal planting drawing families and strollers. The Washington statue, cast from a model by Thomas Ball and dedicated in 1869, was among the earliest large public bronzes in the city, so the photograph captures an early and well-loved corner of the park.
