The Public Garden footbridge, shown here looking eastward, crosses the central lagoon in Boston's oldest public botanical garden, which opened in 1837. The ornate lamps lining the span were part of the cast-iron decoration that gave the park its Victorian character, and they remain one of the first things a visitor notices. Standing at the bridge, you can see how the lagoon, the paths and the lamps were arranged to frame views across the water, a design approach typical of the picturesque park movement that shaped American urban green spaces in the nineteenth century.
