Three vertical sheets join to form one garden scene, and the title, roughly "Pleasure Viewing in a Garden of Windblown Grasses," announces its subject plainly. The print dates from about 1849 to 1852, the late Edo period, when city residents of Japan often spent leisure afternoons touring gardens and flower-viewing grounds. Prints like this one recorded those outings, showing visitors in fashionable dress strolling among plantings and pavilions. Because the image spreads across a full triptych, the viewer's eye moves from panel to panel, following the paths and the crowds through the space.
