Few photographs from the early 1920s show an airplane readied for a flight over the Grand Canyon, and this one, titled "Ready for Grand Canyon flight," captures that moment of preparation. Around 1922, flying over the canyon was still a novelty. Open-cockpit biplanes of the period were more often associated with barnstorming and exhibition flying than with regular sightseeing. The print is credited to R.V. Thomas, and its date places it when aviation was first offering a new way to see the canyon from above, beyond the mule trails and rail routes that had long carried visitors to the rim.
