Nantucket in 1895 was a island town that had moved well past its whaling heyday. The whaling fleet that made the island rich in the mid-1800s had largely vanished by the 1870s, after the discovery of petroleum and the loss of many ships, and the town turned toward tourism, fishing, and summer visitors arriving by steamer from the mainland. Brant Point, at the harbor entrance, was the place where the island's working waterfront met the incoming boats, with the lighthouse and the jetties guarding the channel. Residents were proud of their Quaker and seafaring past, and the old whaling captains' houses along the streets gave the town a settled, faded grandeur that visitors came to admire.
