A stream winding through the Adirondack woods, with deer at the water's edge, is the subject of this steel engraving. R. Hinshelwood made it from a painting by J.M. Hart, N.A., and it appeared in volume 2 of *Picturesque America*, the illustrated survey of American scenery that William Cullen Bryant edited and D. Appleton & Co. published in the early 1870s. Hart was known for pastoral scenes of cattle and farmland, so a quiet woodland study like this one shows how Hudson River School artists turned the wilderness of northern New York into a symbol of the country's natural beauty.
