Unlike most posters of the war, this one has no illustration at all. It is set entirely in type beneath the small arms and the royal monogram of King George V, with the slogan "Wake up England" and the appeal "Complete the second half-million." The poster dates from 1914, when Britain's volunteer army was expanding rapidly after the outbreak of war in August. The first half-million recruits had come forward quickly, and the government then pressed for a second such group. Text-only notices like this one were meant to be read at a glance on hoardings and in public places, where the royal crest and the plain command were designed to carry official authority.
