Few posters on the wall are written entirely in Welsh, and this one addresses single men in Wales directly, urging them to "attest now," the sign-up step that committed a man to military service. Printed in London in 1916 by the Parliamentary and Joint Labour Recruiting Committees, it is a text-only notice that sets out, at some length, the revised rules for recruiting, enlistment, and exemption. Those rules reflect the shift from voluntary enlistment under the Derby Scheme of 1915 toward compulsory service, which Parliament began to impose on single men in early 1916. The poster is a useful record of how the government explained that change to Welsh-speaking men in their own language.
