A German wartime poster from 1916 sets a dove, a common symbol of peace, beside a call to fund the war. Its title, *Gold zerschlägt Eisen* ("Gold Smashes Iron"), urges citizens to bring their gold to purchasing offices, where it was exchanged for paper money to help finance the fighting. The campaign echoed an older Prussian tradition, from the Napoleonic era, of giving up gold for iron jewelry as a patriotic sacrifice. The pairing of a peace symbol with a plea for personal valuables is the detail worth noticing here.
