The Military Service Act, 1916 recruitment poster belongs to a moment when Britain and Ireland were turning from volunteer enlistment to conscription. The Act, passed in January 1916, drafted single men and later married men into the armed forces, and posters like this one were part of the effort to bring in men before compulsion took hold. Its wording and imagery reflect the pressure of those months, when recruiting campaigns still appealed to duty, comradeship and national obligation. Look closely at how the poster addresses its viewer directly, a sign of how urgently the government wanted to frame service as a personal choice before the law made it mandatory.
