The Military Service Act of 1916 was Britain's first conscription law, passed in January of that year as the army's need for men outran volunteer enlistment on the Western Front. This poster was aimed at unmarried men of military age, who were the first group liable for call-up under the act, and its appeal to them reflects the pressure of the moment. Posters like it were a common tool of wartime persuasion, mixing patriotic appeal with the implied question of why a single man was not yet in uniform. Read today, it is a useful window onto how the state tried to shape public opinion as much as onto the war itself.
