Mabel Dwight's lithograph *Silence* turns a quiet library reading room into a study of stillness and concentration. Made around 1939 under the Federal Art Project, the work reflects the Works Progress Administration's support for American printmaking during the Depression, when artists were paid to produce inexpensive prints that could reach public institutions and everyday viewers. Dwight, known for satirical and socially observant lithographs, would have been working in a period when public libraries were busy places for job seekers and readers who had time on their hands. The pencil signature marks it as an impression the artist approved, and the subject of people absorbed in print makes it a fitting look at how reading was understood in those years.
