In the Gloaming shows a farmhouse at dusk, when the last light lingers on the land and the windows begin to glow. The title's word, gloaming, is an old Scots term for twilight, and it sets the mood of quiet return at the end of a working day. Edwin Lamasure painted it, and this color halftone reproduction dates to about 1913. Its copyright credit to Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul points to the calendar and advertising trade, where mass-printed reproductions of rural scenes like this one hung in homes across the country in the early twentieth century.
