A dog sprawls asleep across a porch, its body slack and untroubled, while an American flag hangs limp from a post behind it. The drawing is a cover for The New Yorker's issue of July 6, 1968, arriving just before the Fourth of July holiday, and it was made by William Steig, a cartoonist whose work for the magazine ran for decades and who later became famous as the author of children's books. Steig's gentle joke is in the contrast: the flag is the symbol of a national holiday, yet the dog has no interest in it and simply naps through the summer afternoon. The ink and watercolor work is loose and warm, the kind of easy domestic scene that made his covers instantly recognizable.
