The Whim" is a hand-colored engraving published in London by Laurie & Whittle at 53 Fleet Street, dated December 12, 1808. Its catalog subjects (marriage, eating and drinking, taverns, and women's employment) point to a satire of everyday London life. Laurie & Whittle sold many topical caricatures of this kind, which were cheap enough for ordinary buyers and were often colored by hand, so each copy looks slightly different. Such prints were a popular way to comment on manners, wedlock, and the place of women in the city's work and leisure.
