A 1913 glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, this view is titled as a Cincinnati car strike, though that title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded and has not been independently verified. Streetcar lines in American cities were frequent sites of labor disputes in the early twentieth century, as transit workers pressed for better pay and conditions and companies sometimes brought in replacement crews. Bain News Service sold news photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this were made to be published and show how urban labor conflict was presented to a national audience.
