A small pencil drawing on a sheet of white paper, measuring a little under nine by thirteen centimeters, shows a horse lying dead. The subject heading places it in the Civil War years, roughly 1860 to 1865, when horses died by the thousands in cavalry charges, artillery work and camp conditions on both sides. Drawings like this one, made quickly and at small scale, were often done by soldiers or artists with the armies, who recorded what they saw in the field. Its plain, unembellished treatment of a carcass is worth noticing, since the war's animal casualties were rarely the focus of its published imagery.
