Four horses thunder abreast in this c1875 print, a subject that draws on the quadriga, the four-horse chariot that was the most prestigious event in ancient Greek and Roman racing. Such scenes were popular in the nineteenth century, when artists and publishers looked to classical antiquity for drama and spectacle. The record links the print to Gibson & Co., but that attribution is unverified, so the publisher and the exact date should be treated with some caution. Viewers may want to note the dynamic composition, with the horses' strained bodies and the chariot's tilt conveying speed.
