A single frame catches a horse at the moment when all four hooves leave the ground, a pose that was hard to see with the eye and that people argued about for generations. Whether a galloping horse ever lifted fully clear of the ground was a question for painters, horsemen and scientists alike, and it was answered most decisively by photography in the late 1870s, when fast shutters and multi-camera sequences began to freeze motion too brief for human vision. The record does not give a date or photographer, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the image is worth noticing for how it turns a moment too quick to see into visible evidence.
