The title, "Children were the pride, joy, beauty, and chief delight of the quarter," comes from the photographer's own caption and sets the tone for a picture of Chinatown's young residents. Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who settled in San Francisco in the mid-1890s, made many portraits of the neighborhood's streets and families between about 1896 and 1906. His work from these years is valued today because it records Chinatown before the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of the district. Genthe's approach was sympathetic and attentive to daily life, so the picture offers a glimpse of the community as its own members lived it.
