The title, *Um Freiheit und Leben*, pairs a slogan about freedom and life with the word "Volkssturm," the People's Storm. That was the German home militia Nazi authorities created in October 1944, drafting men too old for the regular army and boys too young for it as Allied forces advanced into Germany. The record's catalog note suggests a date of 1939, five years before the unit existed, so that date should be treated as an open question. Posters like this one were part of a propaganda effort urging Germans to fight on in defense of their homeland, and the slogan reads differently once the Volkssturm name is taken into account.
