The cock of the walk" takes its title from an old expression for the dominant rooster in a barnyard, and by extension a person who lords it over everyone else. Currier & Ives issued this lithograph in New York in 1879, during the firm's peak years of producing inexpensive, widely sold prints on everyday American themes. The firm's output of that period, including humorous and rural subjects like this one, reached a broad middle-class audience. The print is catalogued as number 1302 in the firm's catalog raisonné, which is the standard reference for identifying and dating its work.
