Emily Mew, a Washington, D.C. photographer, made this platinum print, which is signed on its Rembrandt-style mount and dates to about 1900. Platinum printing was prized by art photographers of the period for its soft, subtle tones and fine detail, and the medium suited portraits like this one. The print belonged to Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading Washington photographer who assembled a collection of artistic photographs by her contemporaries. Johnston gave the collection to the Library of Congress in 1948, and the print was later featured in the 2001 exhibition catalog *Ambassadors of Progress*.
