Easter 1914 is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied images to newspapers. The record gives only the title and date, and notes that the title comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card, so the scene and the people in it are not identified. What the picture does show is the kind of holiday coverage that Bain's photographers produced in the years before the United States entered World War I, when Easter was a common subject for newspaper pictures of churchgoers and holiday crowds. Because the collection is so large, viewers can compare it with other Bain images from the same period to see how news photography of the time was composed and captioned.
