Taken on August 2, 1924, this glass negative shows Agriculture Secretary Henry C. Wallace with agricultural club members in Alamance County, a Piedmont county in North Carolina better known for its textile mills than its farmland. Wallace led the U.S. Department of Agriculture under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, and visits like this one to rural communities were part of an effort to connect federal farm policy with local farm youth and their clubs. The National Photo Company, which documented national figures and events in Washington during these years, made the image. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
