Yosemite stereoviews were among the most popular parlor items of the later 19th century, and this card belongs to a series that carried the valley's granite walls and waterfalls to viewers who would never make the trip west. Stereo cards were paired photographs viewed through a hand-held lens, which gave the cliffs and falls a convincing sense of depth. Yosemite Valley had been set aside by Congress in 1864 as a protected grant, and these views helped build public interest in the place long before it became a national park in 1890.
