This color lithograph depicts the departure from Palos, the Andalusian port from which Columbus sailed on August 3, 1492, with three ships. The title appears in both French and Spanish, a pairing that suits a Spanish subject aimed at a French audience. It was published in Paris by the widow Turgis and printed by Casse frères of Saint-Gaudens, and it dates from between 1850 and 1900, when Columbus's voyages were a popular subject for illustrated prints celebrating heroic exploration.
