Titled *The First Voyage*, this chromolithograph shows a farewell in Spain rather than the later landfall, with Queen Isabella I of Castile among those present. The scene recalls the summer of 1492, when Columbus sailed from Palos with three ships backed by the Spanish crown. The Prang Educational Co. of Boston issued the print in 1893, the year of the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition, when interest in the explorer ran high. Its stated purpose as an educational publisher gives it the feel of a classroom teaching picture as much as a record of events.
