The glass negative dates to roughly 1900 to 1910, when St. Joseph was a busy river city whose railroads, grain trade and livestock markets kept local banks busy with merchants and farmers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many photographs of American towns and businesses in those years, preserved the image, so it records how a firm chose to present itself to the public at the time.
