Alice Paul, the New Jersey-born suffragist pictured here, was photographed around 1918, when the campaign for a federal voting amendment was nearing its final stretch. By then she led the National Woman's Party, whose members picketed the White House in 1917, were arrested, and were jailed, where Paul staged hunger strikes. The caption card that accompanies this print is unverified, so the sitting and photographer are unknown. Congress passed the Nineteenth Amendment in 1919, and it was ratified in 1920.
