Huey P. Long, the Louisiana politician known as the Kingfish, is the sitter in this c1934 portrait, a period when he was one of the most polarizing figures in American public life. Elected governor of Louisiana in 1928 and later a U.S. senator, Long built a political machine around populist promises of wealth redistribution, free textbooks, and expanded public works, and his "Share Our Wealth" campaign drew large followings across the country. The portrait captures him at the height of that national prominence, when his ambitions for the presidency made him a figure both admired and feared. Because the record notes only one print and a c1934 date, it is best read as a document of his public image during the Depression years.
