Paul Bunyan, the towering lumberjack of American tall tales, is the subject here, and the record's tags for barges and railroads point to the river and rail routes that carried timber out of the forests. The legend grew out of logging camps in the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest and gained wide circulation through advertising writer William B. Laughead's 1914 booklet for a lumber company. The record also lists African Americans among its subjects, a reminder that the timber trade behind these stories relied on many workers the legend seldom names. The lithograph dates to about 1953.
