Titled *La Temptation*, this lithograph from about 1869 is a tobacco package label that draws on a Biblical subject to sell a consumer product. Tobacco makers of the 1860s often used colorful printed labels like this one to stand out on shop shelves, and many borrowed familiar religious and classical scenes to attract buyers. The print was copyrighted by Wm. Lee and produced by the New York firm F. Heppenheimer & Co, whose address at 22 and 24 North William Street places it in the city's busy lithographic trade. Labels like this one show how advertising and popular taste overlapped in the decade after the Civil War.
