The title names a pilot called Collins, but the record does not say whether he flew aircraft or guided ships into harbor, and the caption information is unverified. The image survives as a glass negative in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, a New York agency that operated from about 1899 into the early 1930s, supplied newspapers with news photographs, so pictures like this were made to be reproduced quickly for daily readers. Glass negatives of this kind record fine tonal detail, which makes them especially useful to researchers today.
