The forecastle of the U.S.S. *Hartford* is the focus here, a view of the forward upper deck of a ship named for the Connecticut city. The sloop-of-war was Admiral David Farragut's flagship at the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, where he gave the order that became famous, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead." This Detroit Publishing Company glass negative, dated between 1890 and 1901, records the deck fittings and rigging of a vessel that had by then served for decades. Views like this show how American naval ships were kept and worked before steel battleships came to dominate the fleet.
