Aft along the port side of the U.S.S. *Hartford*, this view captures a formal inspection with sailors and ship's rigging laid out for the official eye. The *Hartford* was a wooden sloop-of-war, and she is best remembered as David Farragut's flagship at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864, when he reportedly ordered his fleet forward with the words "Damn the torpedoes." Decades later she served in a training and receiving role, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which made many photographs of American ships and cities in this period, recorded her during those years. The date is an estimate based on the company's 1901 catalog, so the picture likely dates from the final decade of the nineteenth century.
