Looking down from the maintop toward the foretop, this view shows the dense web of lines and the platforms sailors climbed to handle the sails on the U.S.S. Hartford. The sloop-of-war carried Admiral David Farragut's flag at the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, and by the 1890s it had been turned to training duty. Detroit Publishing Company, which issued the 8 by 10 inch glass negative in its large catalog of views, recorded many of the navy's older wooden ships in this period. The photograph is a useful record of the working rigging of a vessel from the Civil War era.
