A steeplechase in England is the subject here, drawn in ink with spectators gathered in the background, a detail that places the racing among a crowd rather than on an empty course. Steeplechasing grew out of informal cross-country contests in the early 1800s, when riders raced from one church steeple to another over hedges, ditches and fences, and by the 1820s to 1840s it had become a popular sport among gentlemen and their audiences. The record notes that "Engraved" is written on the back, which suggests the drawing was prepared as a model for reproduction in print, a common practice in the period for turning sporting scenes into widely circulated images.
