Taken in Madison, Virginia, on August 17, 1929, this view records a local celebration held during Herbert Hoover's first year as president, which began in March of that year. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented American public life in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its title has not been independently verified. Glass plates of this age often show streaks and surface loss as their coatings deteriorate, so some marks on the image come from the negative itself rather than the scene. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947.
