An August 1929 celebration in Madison, Virginia, a small county seat in the Blue Ridge foothills, brings President Herbert Hoover into view. Hoover had taken office earlier that year, and he was known for retreating to his nearby Rapidan Camp in Madison County, so the town sat close to his summer routine. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, which was later donated to the Library of Congress. Visitors may notice streaks and blemishes on the plate, the result of natural deterioration in its original coatings.
