Few places carry as much weight in scripture as the fords of the Jordan, the shallow crossings where the river could be waded on foot. This hand-colored lithograph takes its title from that setting, which the Bible ties to some of its most consequential journeys, including the Israelites' entry into the promised land under Joshua. Published by Currier & Ives in New York, the print belongs to the firm's large body of religious subjects, which were sold widely to families and Sunday schools in the later nineteenth century. Its color was applied by hand after printing, so each impression shows slightly different tones.
