Currier & Ives's lithograph "First Prayer," published in New York around 1870, shows a scene of a young child at prayer, a sentimental subject that the firm turned out in large numbers for a middle-class American market. Its catalog entry in the Gale Research raisonné (no. 2146) places it among the firm's many devotional and domestic genre prints. Such pictures were colored by hand or printed in color and sold cheaply, so they reached ordinary family parlors as well as Sunday school rooms. The image reflects the Victorian emphasis on childhood innocence and religious home life that made this kind of print so popular in the decades after the Civil War.
