Two tablets of the law and the words of the Lord's Prayer sit side by side in this engraved piece, a pairing that was a common sight in American Protestant homes and Sunday schools through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Ten Commandments, traditionally handed to Moses on Mount Sinai, were usually set beside the New Testament prayer taught by Jesus, so the two texts together offered a short summary of Christian moral and devotional life. Prints like this were often hung in parlors or schoolrooms as both decoration and instruction, and the engraved lettering was meant to be read as much as admired.
