Two rows of framed, hand-lettered cards hang side by side here, each one carrying a scene from the Hebrew Bible, with Moses and the Ten Commandments set among them as the central lesson. Cards like these were a staple of Sunday school rooms in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when teachers used large illustrated sheets to walk children through familiar stories. The grid format let a single lesson build from scene to scene, and the Commandments themselves were often taught by rote, so the layout doubled as a memory aid. Notice how the lettering and the simple woodcut-style figures reflect the printing methods of the period.
