The tablets of the Ten Commandments, which Exodus says Moses received on Mount Sinai, were a favorite subject for American printmakers in the 1840s, and this print is dated around September 1844. Printed versions of the Decalogue hung in many nineteenth-century homes and churches, serving as both devotional aids and decoration. The library's shelflist card names an associated person, L. Nagel, and records a copyright deposit in the Southern District of New York, which was a way of registering rights to a work with the federal court. The record notes that these details are unverified, so the card is the best guide to the print's origins.
