The title, *Friendship, Love and Truth*, names three virtues rather than a place or event, and the gallery files it among its religious subjects, which suggests a moral allegory meant for the parlor wall. The print was issued in New York around 1874 by Currier & Ives, the firm that turned lithography into an inexpensive household product. Its hand coloring was typically done by workers who applied colors to each copy by stencil, which made every impression slightly different. Such sentimental and moralizing images sold widely in the 1870s to middle-class families who wanted pictures that expressed their values.
