The Garden of Gethsemane is a religious subject that Currier & Ives returned to often, but this hand-colored lithograph stands out for its focus on the scene in which Christ prays on the Mount of Olives before his arrest, the moment described in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The firm, founded in New York in 1835 and later famous for its sentimental and domestic pictures, issued many such Bible scenes as inexpensive images for family walls and Sunday-school use. Printed as a lithograph in the 1840s, the sheet was colored by hand, a process that made each copy slightly different and kept costs low enough for ordinary households.
