Tiny winged figures move among a songbird, an open nest, and a tangle of blossoms, placing the scene in a garden where the natural and the enchanted meet. Fairy imagery like this grew popular in the nineteenth century, when illustrators and poets drew on older folklore to show small spirits of hedgerows and gardens as gentle companions to birds and flowers. Pictures of this kind appeared often in children's books and decorative prints, and they blur the line the board's heading draws between angels and fairies, since both were pictured as winged beings watching over the natural world.
