Two winged cherubs gather roses in a garden in this die-cut scrap, a small decorative card of the kind made in large numbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Die-cut scraps were printed in color on thin paper, cut out with steel dies, and sold to be pasted into albums, onto cards, and onto letters or keepsake books. Their sentimental imagery of children and angels drew on a long tradition of cherubs in European religious painting, which had been adapted for domestic and secular use by the Victorian era. The garden setting and the flowers make this one a gentler scene than many of the angel scraps in the same group.
